Climbing trees in Kenya

So today started with a fight against a mosquito in the early hours of the morning. Always seems more worthwhile to win the battle while in Africa!

There was an accident in town. This led to George being late to pick us up for the journey to Theta.

Today “Independance Day” in Kenya – when they celebrate the end colonial rule. This means it is a bank holiday and the children don’t have to come to school. But all the children at Theta came in specially to greet us.

A series of lovely presentations including musical instruments.

After this celebration we talked with George & Grace about the sponsorship scheme and how it is going. We asked where the big needs are. They said it is becoming really important to put concrete floors in the classrooms. Every time it rains there is just so much mud.

We then talked about needs in community and homes. Loads of the children are sleeping on mud floors with no matresses. Again this is bad whgen it rains. It also means that bed nets dont work properly (as they need to be tucked in aroun d the matress to provide a space beneath where a sleeping body does not touch the net … or the mosi can bite right through the holes in the net).

Another big need is that quite a few of the families are unable to afford the £5 per month rent for local houses!

Wish we could do more!

Tomorrow we start interviewing at Theta.

Then we went back to Watu wa Maana….  to climb trees and play with the children!
