Since 2009 Grassroots have partnered with Kevin and Debra Kamalraj and their team at working at the heart of this riverside slum. They run a children’s club 365 days a year to provide a safe space for the children to play and do their homework after school.
As a result, parents are able to work a little longer and earn a little extra to pay for food, medicine and other essentials. Alcoholism, disease and abuse are rife and the project is a beacon in this dark place, offering the next generation not only a refuge but a chance to get the best from their education.
To sponsor a child in Chennai, India costs £8 per month. The children attend the club where they receive:
Sponsorship Plus allows you to overpay an extra monthly amount and this money will be used for additional support, perhaps unusual medical needs or as a buffer when currency fluctuations go against us.
Fancy supporting a family with additional food parcels? Concerned about the night-time chill and want to give some blankets? Our gift store provides numerous opportunities to buy small or large items for the projects that make a real difference. You can buy them in your own name or on behalf of someone else – alternative gifts.
Volunteer teams from Grassroots visits the Chennai project every year, usually in January. They interview the children and enrol more onto the scheme. It is hard work, but an awesome experience that has changed the worldview of many. We take people from 18 to 80.
