Whenever someone asks us what alternative gift makes the biggest difference we often say the Family Food Parcel. It does not sound glamorous, but it makes it possible for families to care for other children without struggling to make ends meet. Many of the children Grassroots supports in Kenya are orphans or from dysfunctional families. Often this means the children will be living with a close relative like an Aunt or Grandmother, but in some cases even this is not possible or safe for the child.
To combat this issue, Grassroots partner churches in Kenya have been trying to provide safe, happy homes for children who do not yet have one. Christian families have taken the role of foster families and treat the children as one of their own. Sometimes, this creates financial difficulties and one of the ways Grassroots relieves this pressure is to give the families extra food parcels. A food parcel (including maize or rice, salt, soap, etc.) can be a big help to a families food budget for a month, making it possible to feed the extra hungry mouth around the table.
