Whenever someone asks us what alternative gift makes the biggest difference, we often say the Family Food Parcel. It does not sound glamorous, but it enables families to care for other children without fear of not being able to make ends meet.
Many of the children Grassroots supports in Tanzania are orphans or from dysfunctional families. Often this means the children will be living with a close relative like an Aunt or Grandmother, but in some cases even this just is not possible or safe for the child.
Grassroots partner churches in Mbeya have been trying to provide safe, happy homes for children who do not yet have one. Christian families have taken them in and treat them as one of their own. That’s great, but it creates financial difficulties for the already stretched host families.
One of the ways Grassroots relieves this pressure is to give extra food parcels. A food parcel (including maize or rice, salt, oil, plus soap, etc.) can make a big difference to a family’s food budget for a month, making it possible to help another hungry mouth around the table.
