Education is an integral part of this sponsorship programme. The people we are helping live in the slum where there is very little sanitation or space. So many children see a good education as their way out of the cycle of life as that might enable a better job which in turn might mean they can get out of the hole that they live in.
A lot of the £8 monthly sponsorship goes to provide food; hot meals during the week and tasty snacks at weekends, this allows the child to go to school not feeling hungry and therefore in a better position to learn. The daily cooking for 250 people which Jan and Laurence experienced today, on the street as there is no kitchen that could cope is really something to behold!
Some teachers and college students come to help the children while they do their homework, which varies from the very basic to some very impressive looking Calculus for the students in the top Mathematics classes. Many children wanted to show off their reading and mathematics skills today while we sat with them.
Pastor Kevin's throat is no longer sore, but by the end of today he had totally lost his voice, which was quite upsetting for him, please pray for him.
Kalaivani and Daphne (pictured) are a very important of what we are doing here. There are not a lot of locals within the contacts of the church whose English is good enough to translate during interviews. However, Kalavani's English is. Daphne is her wonderful 6 month old daughter who is adored by the team and played with in turns by everybody while Kalaivani talks to and prays with the children and their carers. We are indebted to volunteers such as Kalaivani and Daphne for all their efforts this week. We have so far interviewed 162 children, we have 104 to go. Thanks for all your support.
