A typical afternoon in the children’s club in the slum in Chennai. The children come to the church centre after school and have a safe place to do their homework. They sit in groups with adults organising them and helping with their work when appropriate. Some days there is a time of singing Christian songs and hearing motivational talks. Then the children are provided with a light meal. This happens 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year. The fact that the children are at the club means their mothers can work to earn for their family knowing their children are somewhere safe rather than in the slum. It also provides a way to help these Dalit children to maximise their education.
