Whew… we have just finished feeding the 200+ children who come to the homework club each day in Chennai. The club concludes each evening with a good size meal. The children sit in rows and their stainless steel bowls and cups are filled and their empty tummies satisfied. Living in the slum in cramped conditions means that many do not have access to cooking facilities. The meal provided as part of the sponsorship puts a massive smile on the faces of the children. It is no exaggeration that it also provides a good night’s sleep – as the children no longer groan with hunger pains.
The noise here tonight is incredible. The children chatter loudly to each other. Every few seconds a young child comes to shake my hand and ask for the 100th time my name. They then run back to their friends and dissolve into giggles. The children clearly enjoy coming to this place. No toys, table tennis, computer games, or anything of the kind. There wouldn’t be room even if they thought it important and had the money. But they are happy to be safe and enjoy the fans blowing the air around. Plus, of course, the knowledge that home work is done and food received.
Kevin and Deborah do a fantastic job. The children are clearly thriving and I can now see that they are putting on weight as we have measured and weighed each one. These figures are compared and checked with last year’s numbers….simply fantastic!
