After years of applying I have finally gained a place for 2012 and will be able to achieve a lifelong ambition and run The London Marathon.
Having completed The Great North Run twice, The Great South Run, The Norwich Half Marathon twice and various triathlons....I think I am ready to take on the ridiculously long 26 miles and 385 yards! It won't be easy and I have months of training ahead of me on cold dark nights but it will all be worth it to raise some money for a very worthwhile cause.
I will be raising money for the Grassroots Trust Tanzania Project. In November 2010 I joined the team on a trip to Mbeya where I was able to help contribute to the fantastic work carried out there. Through this run I hope to raise money to help make even more of a difference to the lives of Tanzanian children.
Thanks to everyone for their support and please feel free to come and cheer for me on the 22nd April!

About LUNCH
At school more than 1.2 million pupils are eligible to receive free school meals. Outside of term time though, free school meals are not available, leaving families under additional pressure to find the extra money to buy food for the children.
This is where LUNCH comes in. During schools holidays, LUNCH provides free, healthy, cooked food to pupils. LUNCH is being run this summer in two locations in the UK, Luton and Corby. Both will provide hot food for local children and young people who usually receive free school meals.
All food served by LUNCH will be purchased with money from donations, which we are relying on to make the project successful. At LUNCH we believe that every child deserves to eat a cooked meal every day. If you agree, we need your help.
It doesn't take much money to make a huge difference. In fact, we're confident we can feed children for £1/day.
If you would like to donate by credit card click the "Donate" button at the top right of this page. To give in other ways follow the instructions below.

AND ... WATCH THIS SPACE ... because soon GRASSROOTS will be launching a UK child sponsorship scheme (£10 per month or £120 per year) to give a very poor child in the UK a school uniform, shoes and other kit they need for the beginning of the school year! You won't get a photo or a name, but you will know your money and prayers are making a BIG difference to a family that is scraping by.

Treasurer fulfills his lifelong ambition!
It has long been my ambition to walk to Wembley to see West Ham play in a Cup Final. Growing up I read books such as “The West Ham story” which tell of the East End leaving en masse on 28th April 1923 to walk to the new national stadium at Wembley which was hosting it’s first ever game: the “White Horse” FA Cup Final between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United.
I grew up in Chelmsford and when choosing universities I applied for three in London (so that I could be close to West Ham). Despite my dedication to the cause, West Ham have not played at Wembley since 14th March 1981 in the League Cup Final which we drew (controversially as Sammy Lee was offside for their goal and Terry McDermott handled on the line and was never sent off) with Liverpool 1-1.
On 14th March 1981 I was precisely 4 years and 5 months and coming from a non-football supporting family, did not really have the chance to go (nor am I entirely convinced I knew it was on: to be honest). It has been a long wait. West Ham reached three finals 2004-2006, but they were played at Cardiff whilst Wembley was being redeveloped and don’t really count towards my lifelong dream.
I now live in Scotland (I like it here, I applied to two universities in Scotland!) It is not feasible for me to walk to Wembley from Clydebank as I am not fit enough, I have not prepared and I have work to do and children to look after. However, I am walking from Victoria Coach Station via the four places I lived in London between the years 1994 and 2008. This is a 14 mile walk (according to Google Maps). The places are City University Halls of Residence, Bastwick Street: 14 Ward Road, Tufnell Park: The Beacon, 17 Fleet Road & 35 Estelle Road, Gospel Oak.
I would love to run a marathon, cycle a stupidly long distance, or even do a bungee or parachute jump. Things that others do for sponsorship. However, I don’t have the dedication to do one of these! Walking from home to watch West Ham at Wembley is an ambition and something I do have the dedication for. Please sponsor me.
Apart from West Ham, the other reason for moving to London as a soon-to-be 18 year-old in 1994 was Hugo & Sharon Anson. They were starting a church and having spent a very stressful but extremely fulfilling week with them the previous autumn on a mission, that sounded really exciting. What’s more in the summer of ‘94, I really met with Jesus in a vibrant way which meant I wanted to keep telling others about him. I joined The Beacon and have been part of the ministry Hugo and Sharon have been involved with ever since.
Grassroots started in 1996 and I have been the treasurer for all but the first 18 months of it (when Hugo ran the show and gift aid didn’t even exist!)
I love the way that in my job we try to make best use of all the resources we have to aid effectively and to show Jesus to as many people as we can. “Where a little goes a long way”
I love the way that while we work amongst some of the poorest people in Tanzania and India, we work with a totally different crowd in Tenerife and set up prayer spaces in schools through Orison. (As well as all the other projects inbetween!)
I love the way that Jesus does seem to be involved in the vast majority of it!
Despite being the money man, I have not been good at fundraising for Grassroots. I have rarely tried and I’m only really trying now to justify myself going to a football match! (it’s honest!)
When I talk about money (which I have done a fair deal as a trained debt counsellor) it is usually to tell people to stop wasting it, budget, don’t fritter it away and plan your spending in advance.
So I’m going against the flow: spending silly money (not Grassroots’!) to go to a football match and asking you to sponsor me to do something silly and not really that hard! But please do, your money won’t go to waste!
My aim is that in the next week I will raise £300 and that money will go to the work of Grassroots, wherever it is most needed. Your support is most appreciated. Come on You Irons! COME ON JESUS!
PS if you want to line the route in claret and blue or come and cheer me on that would be most appreciated.
